Show V. Story

Seth tells the difference between product ads that are all show, glitz, airy and a product that has a story. The story is much more important than how you tell it. He criticizes super bowl commercials as a waste of time and money, only focused on the way to tell the story (apparently they think the best way is spending millions of dollars on mere seconds!).

Color Matters

This article from Core77 notes a study printed in the Times about effects of color on people.

Some points:
- "Red can make people's work more accurate, and blue can make people more creative."
- Athletes wearing red win 60% of the time over those wearing blue.
- Men found women hotter in photographs containing red.

Then there is is a study on how the color of the bar people were in made people do different things (be more social, eat more, etc).

I really don't think tests like these can be accurate, there are too many outside variables. But the results are interesting still, but I just wouldn't read them as fact.

Logo and Colors

Here is our logo! I really like it because it's even to read even with the bit of erosion feel the font has to it.

The color choices are going to be: monochrome and blue. This is taking from the theme of what most jazz posters were like. So the colors will be classic, but the design of the site will be more modern, going in the 'acid' part of it (the addition of hip hop / electronic / etc)

AJ : Acid Jazz

The site I'm redesigning is Jazz.com. 

The new site will be called AJ (Acid Jazz). It will be a forum for those interested in all things acid, including facts on copyrighting, new technology, where to get the best records, and more!

Here is some info on Acid jazz (also known as groove jazz in USA) is a musical genre that combines elements ofjazz, funk and hip-hop^[1], particularly looped beats. It developed in the UK over the 1980s and 1990s and could be seen as tacking the sound of jazz-funk onto electronic dance/pop music: jazz-funk musicians such as Roy Ayers and Donald Byrd are often credited as forerunners of acid jazz.^[2] Acid jazz has also experienced minor influences from soul music, house music anddisco.

While acid jazz often contains various types of electronic composition (sometimes including sampling or live DJ cutting and scratching), it is just as likely to be played live by musicians, who often showcase jazz interpretation as part of their performance. The compositions of groups such as Jamiroquai, The Brand New Heavies and Incognito often feature chord structures usually associated with jazz music. The Heavies in particular were known in their early years for beginning their songs as catchy pop and rapidly steering them into jazz territory before "resolving" the composition and thus not losing any pop listeners but successfully "exposing" them to jazz elements in "baby steps".

The acid jazz "movement" is also seen as a "revival" of jazz-funk or jazz fusion or soul jazz by leading DJs such as Norman Jay or Gilles Peterson or Patrick Forge, also known as "rare groove crate diggers" or "Cataroos".

Seth and Bullies

Here Seth talks about bullies and 'taking away the ball' but is referring to bullies in the workplace.

Basically, if you have an issue with an employer, be respectful and let them know about what's bothering you. It may be hard to do but respect in the workplace is extremely important.

Designs that save

Core 77 notes the inventor of the LIFE STRAW, a water filter device that can take water from any source (including puddles!) and make it safe to drink.

Vestergaard-Frandsen is the creator of this product and others that seek to improve the lives of the poor (like PermaNet, a net with insecticide to keep away bugs with diseases).
