FUNNY GARBAGE!

Funny Garbage

From it’s name to it’s website, Funny Garbage stands out as a leader among web and interactive media design.

For the past ten years, Funny Garbage has specialized in digital business, entertainment, websites, and applications. Their clients range from ABC News to Comedy Central. The company was started by John Carlin and Peter Girardi; veterans of the art and design world. Eventually, Kristin Ellington, who brought with her a production process that is the current standard in the interactive industry, joined them.

Funny Garbage concentrates in web sites, applications, digital business, and entertainment. They have had much success with a wide variety of clients in each of these areas.

Within the entertainment section, Funny Garbage has worked to co-direct and produce TV shows on channels from PBS to Comedy Central to ESPN. One of their works, “‘Imagining America’ is a three-part PBS documentary exploring the transformation of 20th-century America, told through the words and work of some of the century's most significant artists.” It was co-directed by the president of Funny Garbage, John Carlin in addition to Jonathan Fineberg and Hart Perry. One of their newest projects, the ABC News Electoral Calculator was a huge success. ABC wanted an interactive map that would allow their web users to follow the election and “Calculate the Map to the White House.”

Funny Garbage has created websites for over one hundred successful companies. VH1, YAHOO!, Nickelodeon, Disney, IFC, AIGA, The N, and Fox News are just a few clients on Funny Garbage’s impressive list of clients. Cartoon Network was one of Funny Garbage’s biggest, most successful projects. They revamped the site to be interactive and have behind the scenes aspects to it. They were extremely innovative in their approach, and the average visit length increase to forty-five minutes. In addition, Funny Garbage created original animations for the TV Network. An example is Teen Titans title Animation.  They actually scanned physical objects and treated them in Photoshop and Illustrator to create many of the graphical elements.

Creating applications for the web, devices, and on-air is another specialty of Funny Garbage. They work with all types of target audiences. From teenagers, to adults, to children, Funny Garbage has no limits to who they can reach. An example of reaching out to children is the Noggin website and “Scribblevision.” Scribblevision is an interactive, on-line coloring book application. The color books contain characters from Noggin’s shows, and there is even the option of animating the characters afterwards.

Lastly, Funny Garbage works with companies to create multimedia projects, or “Digital Business,” that will enhance the clients’ visibility. Their newest project in progress is Lil’ John’s A’ Town. By creating animated shorts, they will be the “jumping off point for an on line business based upon DJ parties hosted by the L'il Jon's character and a community that will grow around the parties and the local jams that our regulars will create themselves. This will be a jumping off point for an on line business based upon DJ parties hosted by the L'il Jon's character and a community that will grow around the parties and the local jams that our regulars will create themselves.”

One of the things that leads to the success of Funny Garbage is their ability to keep up with the fast paced ways of interactive design and the web. For instance, one of the prominent links on their website is to visit their "flog," The Funny Garbage FLOG. Obviously, this is their attempt, as a company to keep up with media trends, like the trend of blogging. As you can see below, they have a humorous post entitled, "What if...Funny Garbage was a cereal company...?"

In addition to this, they have an attractive, unique, fun style. Their own colorful website with it’s bouncing flash animation and colorful graphics entices business owners to browse the site more to see the kind of work Funny Garbage produces.

Funny Garbage’s ability to work in array of media project and adaptability to work with any client for any target audience makes it one of the top media firms in the country.

comfiest chair EVER!

I had another post of chairs with a brick pattern, making it ironic that they were comfortable. This chair is the opposite! It looks extremely comfortable, and actually has foam pieces inserted into each "quilt" bit.

The factory is what need to GO GREEN!

This Core77 post talks about how these designers below have created a "greensulate." A material that is environmental friend and will help to insulate factories. Which made me think of the video above, The Story of Stuff. Check it out!

box chair!

It's great how people take inspiration from the most simplest of objects.
Take this chair, based on a cardboard box. I would love a chair like this, because I'm put my stuff all over the "flaps."

interesting exhibit.

Design boom features Jan Fabre's extremely interesting and unique exhibit. In addition to this one being installed in the flood, there's another (below) with legs hanging out of the ceiling!

It's really interesting to see exhibits that are installed all over in unique ways, instead of just paintings on the wall.

bike car?

This was interesting to me because my dad rides a recumbent bike and this is like a recumbent with a car windshield and protection. I think it would take awhile for people to get used to be so close to the ground!

Insane Statue!

designboom features an article on a proposed statue for zaabeel park in dubai.

"for their proposal visiondivision designed a statue based around al hakawati - a storyteller,
whose profession that goes way back in ancient arabic times and still is performed in the
arabic world today. the statue will be a home of stories; a children’s library in its base
and various spaces for performance and reading inside of the statue."

It's a TAD to much on the creepy side. With it's empty gaze and out stretched hand. Just a bit too much for me. In the proposal is also the fact that the statue can move! Which adds another aspect of creepiness. I giant naked man statue that can move also? It's a bit much. Although, the idea is cool. Espcially because it would not merely be a statue, but it would have floors functioning for things like restaurants, libraries, and more!

Furthering communication...

On the bike path!

the design blog features this new blue tooth communication device, the bike bug.
One part of the device connects to your helmet (which is smart, forces people who want to use it to use a helmet!). The blue tooth part is just like the ones used for phones. So when you travel with a group of people on the bike path you are now able to easily talk to your group!

SKETCHY!

Core 77 posted an article that really struck me as interesting! It's about a new book,

Sketchbooks: The Hidden Art of Designers, Illustrators and Creatives (Hardcover)

The book shows artist biographies then pages from their sketch books. After my drawing ii class, in which we had to keep a sketch book where we could put ANYTHING visual in it. This was probably my favorite assignment. And I realized I can you my sketches and random sketch book things for graphic design work! Take this flier for instance:
the background is made from playing with THIS image in photoshop. thats from my sketchbook. It's melted crayons.

Core 77 posts another 1 hour design challenge, to make interactive business cards.
Above is my favorite, a pin hole camera "business card"
Fantastic!

tshirt color variation!

COLOR!
Post by designboom.
These tshirts designed for Tokyo Art Beat.

They come in two different color schemes. It's cool to see how the different themes affect the mood and design of the shirt. Personally, I believe the cyan magenta shirt has a more playful look to it.

The Value of Wisdom

A Thousand Tomorrows tributes this entry to a fantastic new documentary piece.

See it here.

time time time

Seth Godin types an entry about using time wisely. Basically, if you have the information available, why not just START? This is a good question. I know I am a slave to procrastination myself. This blog is an example. There are a million and one things to write about, but sometimes I just avoid it. And what does this cause? Anxiety.. and stress!

Something to work on.

Wow. I really like this!

Design Boom features Matt Green.

I've recently been playing with mixed media, myself, and with the idea in my head.
Matt Green "drawing and photography are both used atop textured surfaces that have been coated
with thick layers of varnish."

I like the gritty, unplanned feel mixed with specific intentions (lines creating perspective)

What will they come up with next??

CORE77 speaks of how marketers are not only coming up with ads and such, but are now designing products to promote their movies.

The above is a skateboard. The marketers for this movie "invited artists around the world to re-interpet the U.S.S. Starship Enterprise to promote the upcoming movie."

It's an interesting concept. Will the marketers eventually sell these products? Curious...

It's a Smart Idea, so Stop being SNEAKY!

Seth Godin posts a sweet little link in this entry. Cookies track your web activity, and some companies are secretly tracking what you do and where you are going to get you more specific ads. For instance, google mail and facebook does this. THIS link let's you clear yourself from some of these companies grips!

I agree with Seth, that personalized ads are not a terrible idea, and I'd rather see ads for things I actually may want to buy! Sirius Satellite Radio has just copyrighted a way to do something similar, on air.

These things are ok, as long as they aren't done without us knowing. Let us give you PERMISSION.
Seth wrote a whole book on that. Good stuff.

The cactuses continue!

There was a different post from designboom with products inspired by cactuses. This design was feature in Core77. I love the detail in the cushion. I just wonder if the things that are sticking out would be easily pulled out or get worn quickly. Either way, it's an absurd design, but it's still great!

Crafty Eh??

My friend are always calling me crafty, but I don't believe I could be as crafty as these people!
Design Boom showcases this result in the "Craft Punk Design" contest in Miami.

The turntable starts the motion and sets off a series of small machines. Basically, it looks like a music video, to whatever song is on the turntable.
AWESOME!

Be GOOD at least.

In Seth Godin's entry he talks about how because there are so many tools for learning graphic design that are readily available / cheap / free, so everyone should be decent at it, at least! Better yet, good.

Obviously, studying to be a graphic designer I want to be GREAT. But the above is how I feel about web design / ccs. I feel like I should be at least decent. And I'm getting there, with trying to learn the band myspaces. Problem is there are so many tutorials and what not, it's hard to decide which to trust and whatnot. But it is true that everyone should use their time wisely to take advantage of these things.

I'm working on it!

List of places to learn about graphic basics from Seth.

Garbage Art!

So, this guy, Alejandro S. Ceron, makes stuff that sort of looks like garbage! If you saw this stuff just out in someone's yard, you'd probably think, man, they should leave that inside until garbage day!

But it's cool. It's called beautyfull mess. I'm a big fan actually.

here are his sketches.

not serious enough?

the pee poo bag. reading about it, it is an amazing product with huge potential to help the "2.6 billion people have no access to basic sanitation."

So really, it had to be called, the peepoo bag?
The design is too cutesy. It doesn't fit with the purpose of the bag. I guess the lime green font combined with the fun rounded sans serif font on top of the name, PEEPOO? Really. I think the product idea is ingenious, but the design could use some work.

Displaying art in new ways!!

Guerrilla Knitting. Yarn Bombing. Knit Graffiti.
Who would have frikken thunk it??

There are so many types of art out there. People who crochet and knit? They are taking their art to the street.
These (mostly) ladies bring up the question.. what is art? I believe most of them think what they are doing is. They also challenge stereotypes...that graffiti is a boys club.

Well, think again...
Welcome ladies!!

recycled art, new ideas!

These days, everyone is going green, including artists!

Street Art using recycled bags

Also, design boom has tons on entries merely about art using old cassette tapes!
And of course, using them in different ways. The top picture shows an artist who uses tapes as his canvas, beneath, he uses the actual tape to design portraits.

Forget $16 tubes of gauche, there are so many resources out there..
for free!

Cheap car tray, ugly, but needed!

Coree77 post a short entry on a design that may not have the best name or look, but it gets the job done!

At only $14, this product will come in useful for those trying to write, use their laptops, or eat in the car. It straps to the steering wheel or the back of the seats.

So although it may not be the best overall design, it is a product that meets the needs of the consumer. And it is almost out of stock!

whatever floats your boat...or cactus

design boom compiles a huge list of varying products--from furniture to dildos, all based on one design concept, cacti.

It's incredible how so many different designs can come from one thing. It's also incredible how people can get their inspiration from anything really :-)

Ian Wheeler, Guest Speaker

Notes!

President of The Knitting Factory Label

Holy crap signed GIRL TALK hahahah. Woah. Small world. I submitted art work to Girl Talk on a whim.

Must be really great with contracts because describing the deal between Knitting Factory and his two companies was very complicated!

Worked with Corporate integration where he'd set up events to get them involved with his music scene. He was focusing 40% corporation, 60% artist focused, but the bad economy also hit him, because companies are limiting marketing money.

At any record label, marketing companies in general, you're sending out packages. E-mail check-ups. Packages always very glaring, sparkly stickers on envelopes! Great design move. Everything is branding. Logo sticker (partisan) goes out in everything they send. Branding is ESSENTIAL! Lots of static images that are recognizable. It's hard because everything is so saturated, so many brands and bands.

Unique selling points. Like vinyl with laser etching. Redneck bumper sticker. The product is everything. Simple and funny works well too. Taking art work and making variations to send to different media forms. Just changing using photoshop!

Digital Booklets. Same things as in CDs. Making them interesting is so hard. How do you give interesting content? How do you fill the physical void of buying music offline?

Disappointed with printing aspect, met really good digital marketing guy Adam. More interested in this aspect. Death of CDs in unavoidable

All about networking baby. And Internships. Gotta do the unpaid labor bit. Gotta be nice and make friends and have fun. Fun industry. Be a good bull shitter man. The ability is paramount.

The need to learn something new. You've got to teach yourself. Ordering books off Amazon. Starting with, How to make friends and influence people. Get It! Amazon then recommends more that are similar. Read Warren Buffet too.

I want into this SO BAD!
Doing exactly what you want to do works. For the confidence. Can really make you successful.
Gotta be happy yo. Write your ideas down. ie. being green is a new money maker. BE GREEN FOOL! Then act upon those ideas and information. Information is useless until it's used (thanks prof. caputi). Leap into ACTION

Disappointment. Get used to it. Good things will happen that make up for the bad stuff. Don't give up and be persistent. Take something away from everything. Make your mistakes but learn from them. FIX them.

You can figure out bad situations, that's built into us.
Be willing to work hard and be on top of things at internships.

They Definitely Hit the Spot!!!

Core77 just posted these pictures and asked the readers to guess what it is.

I knew right away, a hair straightener! It is made to appeal to 25-35 year olds.

My opinion of why this product will do well.
It's sleek, small, and most importantly,
WIRELESS.

Good job Bluelarix.

Sitting Green

Going Green seems to be catching on in every aspect of life. Design Boom featured pictures from The Stockholm Furniture Fair, showing creative designs in the green house exhibition.

The lights are made of plastic bags. I love seeing what people can do with old materials!

Show V. Story

Seth tells the difference between product ads that are all show, glitz, airy and a product that has a story. The story is much more important than how you tell it. He criticizes super bowl commercials as a waste of time and money, only focused on the way to tell the story (apparently they think the best way is spending millions of dollars on mere seconds!).

Color Matters

This article from Core77 notes a study printed in the Times about effects of color on people.

Some points:
- "Red can make people's work more accurate, and blue can make people more creative."
- Athletes wearing red win 60% of the time over those wearing blue.
- Men found women hotter in photographs containing red.

Then there is is a study on how the color of the bar people were in made people do different things (be more social, eat more, etc).

I really don't think tests like these can be accurate, there are too many outside variables. But the results are interesting still, but I just wouldn't read them as fact.

Logo and Colors

Here is our logo! I really like it because it's even to read even with the bit of erosion feel the font has to it.

The color choices are going to be: monochrome and blue. This is taking from the theme of what most jazz posters were like. So the colors will be classic, but the design of the site will be more modern, going in the 'acid' part of it (the addition of hip hop / electronic / etc)

THE SITE SHALL BE CALLED...

AJ : Acid Jazz

The site I'm redesigning is Jazz.com.

The new site will be called AJ (Acid Jazz). It will be a forum for those interested in all things acid, including facts on copyrighting, new technology, where to get the best records, and more!

Here is some info on Acid jazz (also known as groove jazz in USA) is a musical genre that combines elements ofjazzfunk and hip-hop[1], particularly looped beats. It developed in the UK over the 1980s and 1990s and could be seen as tacking the sound of jazz-funk onto electronic dance/pop music: jazz-funk musicians such as Roy Ayers and Donald Byrd are often credited as forerunners of acid jazz.[2] Acid jazz has also experienced minor influences from soul musichouse music anddisco.

While acid jazz often contains various types of electronic composition (sometimes including sampling or live DJ cutting and scratching), it is just as likely to be played live by musicians, who often showcase jazz interpretation as part of their performance. The compositions of groups such as JamiroquaiThe Brand New Heavies and Incognito often feature chord structures usually associated with jazz music. The Heavies in particular were known in their early years for beginning their songs as catchy pop and rapidly steering them into jazz territory before "resolving" the composition and thus not losing any pop listeners but successfully "exposing" them to jazz elements in "baby steps".

The acid jazz "movement" is also seen as a "revival" of jazz-funk or jazz fusion or soul jazz by leading DJs such as Norman Jay or Gilles Peterson or Patrick Forge, also known as "rare groove crate diggers" or "Cataroos".

THANK YOU WIKIPEDIA!

Don't let them get to you.

Seth and Bullies

Here Seth talks about bullies and 'taking away the ball' but is referring to bullies in the workplace.

Basically, if you have an issue with an employer, be respectful and let them know about what's bothering you. It may be hard to do but respect in the workplace is extremely important.

Designs that save

Core 77 notes the inventor of the LIFE STRAW, a water filter device that can take water from any source (including puddles!) and make it safe to drink.

Vestergaard-Frandsen is the creator of this product and others that seek to improve the lives of the poor (like PermaNet, a net with insecticide to keep away bugs with diseases).
